I first met Tim Newfields in 1991 when he conducted a
class for volunteer interpreters for the
International Association of Shizuoka City.
Using a wide range of techniques discussion questions,
Mr. Newfields showed us how keep a conversation moving.
He helped us think more about conversation dynamics - not only what
was said, but also the reasons why conversations followed usual patterns.
Thanks to his good pacing, time seemed to pass quickly
during his course. I was surprised how quickly the lesson was over.
Since then, I have studied with Mr. Newfields once or twice a month
over the last six years with a group of six other Japanese students. Mr. Newfields has successfully
worked with various group members. I have come to see him not
merely as an English teacher, but also as a person who has challenged me to
think about the world.
One of the most interesting things about Tim's classes is the way
he combines a sense of concern for global issues with a personal
sense of interest in each student, a respect for their opinions, and
a warm sense humor.
In addition to teaching, but I have admired Tim's
writings and his translations of works from Japanese into English.
To date he has translated three books for the Shizuoka Shinbun,
the leading publisher in this area. He has helped proof read
many works. His insight into Japanese culture and clear language use
is something our staff respects.
Both as a teacher and translator, I am pleased to recommend
Mr. Newfields for further employment.
