Letter of Recommendation
4 May 1998
To Whom It May Concern:
It gives me a great deal of pleasure to write a reference for Tim Newfields. I have known
Tim for roughly a decade as a colleague, and also in our capacity as executive members of
the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT), an organization dedicated to proving
lectures, publications, and support to language teachers in Japan. As the founder and first
president of the Shizuoka Chapter of JALT, it was important for me to hand over the running
of that chapter to an organized and conscientious person who would be capable of handling the
constant work that is part of running any volunteer organization. Tim had demonstrated his
capability in his excellent handling of programming, as well as his important contributions
to members of the executive committee. He was clearly the appropriate person to become
president, and I was delighted to see that the chapter flourished under his guidance.
Planning of events, attracting members, as well as the daily running of a bicultural organization
is often frustrating, requiring dedication, effective administrative staff, and an ability
to lead, and work with many types of people. Tim did a superb job.
If you have access to the Internet, I highly recommend that you have a look at Tim's
excellent website at http://www.tnewfields.info/ in order to see a good example
of a properly organized homepage. As you will see not only from his web site, but also
from his publications, Tim is interested in using the Internet as a resource for teaching,
and has gone to great lengths to teach himself coding, as well as other skills needed to
use the Internet in the most effective way possible. Tim is not only capable of using
technology in the classroom, he is also skilled in effectively communicating with his
students in more traditional ways.
I highly recommend Tim Newfields as an energetic, highly capable member of your teaching
staff. He brings with him many skills which will be of great benefit to not only students,
but other teachers as well. He is easy to work with, accepts responsibility willingly,
and works diligently to get things done on time and to a high standard. If you require
further information, I will be very happy to provide it.
Very Sincerely Yours,
John B. Laing
