GOAL: To describe people in more detail and understand more detailed descriptions of people.


A. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS LESSONS:
Answer the questions below-

  1. How did you celebrate your most recent birthday?
  2. How many semesters do most Japanese universities have?
  3. How is today's humidity?
  4. What are your plans on Sunday?
  5. What's chance of rain tomorrow?
  6. Does your father have a moustache?
  7. Is your mother vivacious?

B. PRONUNCIATION FOCUS: Clipped pronouns

Word pairs with clipped sounds-
    1.  give me  Gim'me a minute!    2. come on  C'mon,  we've got'ta go! 
    3.  kind of  I kin'na like 'er.  4. like an  You look like'n old man

    Now listen to these sentences at natural speed:

C. VOCABULARY REVIEW
Match the words on the left with the drawing on the right -

  2. Are beards or mustaches common here?
  3. How common are zits among teenagers here? Are they common among adults?
  4. Do many Japanese dye their hair?

E. LISTENING/SPEAKING
Aiko and her good friend Amy chat in a coffee shop.

G. ROLE PLAY
Work in groups of three and follow these roles:
    PERSON A:  Choose one of the 30 people listed below. Answer questions
               from B & C about how that person looks. 

    PERSON B & C: Ask Person A questions about the person that he/she chose.
               Try to guess which of the 30 persons below is being described. 
SAMPLE QUESTIONS:
* Is it a man or woman?
* Does this person have glasses?
* What sort of eyebrows does this person have?
* etc.

H. FURTHER DISCUSSION
Discuss these questions in small groups:
   1.   Are your parents easygoing or up-tight?     
   2.   Do you ever use make up?
   3.   Have you ever dyed your hair? 	
   4.   What sort of cosmetics do you use?
   5.   Is your father bald?     
   6.   What's your mother look like?
   7.   How common are zits in Japan?

I. COMMON MISTAKES
Correct these errors individually, then discuss in class:
   1. *He is in his high teens.    2. *They are oval faces.    3. *Her nose is low.
