GOAL: To describe your future plans and ask about the aspirations of others.

A. PRONUNCIATION FOCUS "AE" vs. "U" sounds
Underline the word you hear in brackets, then practice both sounds.
    1. Where's your [ ankle / uncle]      4. Look at her [bat / butt]!
    2. I saw a  cat / cut].               5. We're trapped in a [rat / rut].
    3. Do you have a [hat / hut].         6. It was a [GAT / gut] reaction.

B. CULTURE QUESTIONS
Answer these questions in small groups
  1. To get a good job in Japan is a college education necessary?
  2. When do most Japanese college students start job hunting?
  3. What percentage of students at this university have no job when they graduate?
  4. Do many students here go on to graduate school?

C. LISTENING/SPEAKING FOCUS
Kei and Ken are both college juniors, are talking about their futures
  
	Kei:   Well, the academic year is _______________1 over!
	Ken:   Yeah. It's been nice _________2 you this year. What are your plans this spring vacation?
	Kei:   I can't say for sure. Maybe I'll work ________3 time in Tokyo. How about you?
	Ken:   I'd like to take a short trip overseas, but am _______4 of cash. I'll probably work part time.
	Kei:   Speaking of work, what would you like to do after ___________5?
	Ken:   That's a difficult question. The ____________6 is down. I'm not sure. How 'bout you?
	Kei:   Well, I'd like to work for my __________7 factory. My grandfather founded a _________8 mill
	       in Fuji City and I can always find a job there. 
	Ken:   So, it's a ___________9 business?
	Kei:   Yeah, more or less. About 50 people work there. The managers are all relatives.
	Ken:   I see. In a way, I ____________10 you. You have contacts. My future is not guaranteed.

D. ROLE PLAYS

STUDENT A - You are looking for a job. Answer questions by Person B.

STUDENT B - You own a small paper mill and want to hire a new worker (as cheaply as possible). Ask Person A some questions.


E. GRAMMAR FOCUS - Giving evasive answers to questions.
                                Examples:

	 I can't say for sure. . . That's a difficult question . . . It's hard to say . . . more or less


F. FURTHER DISCUSSION
Discuss these questions in small groups
  1. How difficult is it to find a job in Japan today? Why?
  2. Have any of your friends already decided where they will work?
  3. How much do young people in Japan usually make a month?
  4. Do you think Japan's economy will improve?
  5. Do most companies in Japan offer life-long employment?
