ODE TO AN ONION: On the Metaphysics of the Olfactory
『タマネギの賦』〜嗅覚の形而上学について〜 

Ah, 
how your long, slender leaves
with waxy strands of green 
curve down lazily 
towards a bulbous base.
ああ、
あなたの長くて細い葉
緑のワックス状のストランドで
あなたの怠惰にカーブダウン

Oh, 
your olfactory overloads of peppery, piquant pungency
prick my nostrils with no sense of shame!
ああ、
ピカント辛味のあなたの嗅覚過負荷
恥ずかしさの感覚を持たない私の鼻孔を刺す!

Exploring each layer of your enigma,
new questions rise up from the dark soil 
of my consciousness and wetness of my wild desires. 
あなたの謎の各層を探索し、
新しい質問は暗い私の土壌から立ち上がる。
「野菜はどうやってそんなに法外なことができますか?」

"How exorbitant can vegetables be?
I wonder salaciously, then ask myself
"What does being an onion actually mean?"
あなたの強い臭いに酔って、私は自分自身に尋ねる〜

「タマネギであることは実際にはどういう意味ですか？」

Laughing while chomping on your bulging delight,
you reply audaciously,
"What's more zingy than philosophy?"
あなたの謎の層を次々と探求しているとき、

Ron:   Aren't we like onions?
ミン：  私達ってさぁ、タマネギに似てない？ 

Lex:  (pausing in surprise) Well, that metaphor has zing!

Lis:   Perhaps all existence is what Szymborska calls "the idiotism of perfection?"
ティン： おそらく、すべての存在は、シンボルスカが「完璧の愚」と呼ぶものです。 

Linda:  Sounds good to me. Much better than the skin of discontent . . .
玲亜：   いいんじゃない？うわべだけの不平家よりはましではないでしょうか。
