I. Suggested Answers to Comprehension Questions

  1. It is best not to drink before driving. Even slight amounts of alcohol can influence performance.
  2. That depends on what else you have eaten and had to drink . . . usually within minutes alcohol begins to influence the brain.
  3. A 12 ounce can of beer which is 3.5% alcohol by weight contains about just under half an ounce of pure alcohol (.42 oz).
  4. For most people, coordination loss becomes obvious at a BAC of .1 or higher.
  5. Alcoholics Anonymous is a group of recovering alcoholics who help each other grow and to stay sober.
  6. Compulsive overeaterns may find help at Overeaters Anonymous.
  7. Developing positive ways of dealing with stress, a good self-image, and value in delayed gratification can help people avoid addictions.
  8. This article discusses addiction in general and alcohol and nicotine addiction in particular. It discusses some of the dangers of alcohol and tobacco and suggests ways that those with various addictions can get help.
II. Suggested Answers to Questions for Further Exploration

  1. Beer is probably the most alcoholic beverages, but a number of traditional Chinese wines sell well.
  2. Juice, tea, and soda are common non-alcoholic beverages.
  3. A healthy person can break down about a half ounce of pure alcohol - roughly the same amount as one drink. It would thus a normal person about 4 hrs. to get rid of 4 drinks. Most of the alcohol is broken down by the liver. Small amounts are expelled through urine and the breath.
  4. Neither coffee nor betel nut can really make a drunk person more sober. . . betel nut might give you more energy, but the alcohol will remain and continue to affect the brain.
  5. Blood alcohol level is usually measured by a special machine called a "breathalyzer".
  6. Because alcohol depresses some important brain functions.
  7. Alcohol can affect the development of an unborn child, so it is better for pregnant women to avoid drinking.
  8. That, of course, depends on the type of drug. Aspirin and alcohol are legal drugs. Illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine, opimum or marijuana carry the death penality.

V. Suggested Answers to Word Contrasts

betel nut - chewing gum


Both these substances are chewed and both are inexpensive. However, betel nut is a stimulant that damages the gums and teeth.

cigarettes - cigars


Both of these products contain tobacco and are smoked. Both are bad for heatlh. Cigarettes are more common than cigars. Cigars are usually more expensive than cigarettes.

coffee - tea


Both of these are popular beverages which in many parts of the world. Whereas coffee is native to South America, tea probably came from India. Black tea and coffee both contain caffeine. There are probably more different types of tea than coffee.

opium - heroin


Opium is older than heroin. Heroin was invented about a hundred years ago, but opium is thousands of years old. Both of these illegal drugs are made from a poppy flower. Both of these drugs are controlled by power criminal gangs.

aspirin - alcohol


There is little that these two drugs have in common. Aspirin is a pain reliever and a white powder at room temperature. Alcohol is a clear liquid which depresses the brain. Both drugs are legal, though poisonous is taken in excessive quantities.
