A. SURVIVAL PHRASES
Match these phrases, and practise them in pairs-

B. GRAMMAR FOCUS: Degrees of Frequency

C. PRE-LISTENING FOCUS:
Discuss these questions in small groups -
  1. Have you met many people recently?
  2. Recently have you spoken with any people from abroad?

Kay and Ken are classmates meeting each other the first time.

H. ROLE PLAY

Work in pairs. Introduce yourself to your partner.
Chat a few minutes with him/her.



I. PRONUNCIATION FOCUS: Word Stress
Underline the key words you hear emphasized.
Example - I major in marine science.
  1. I'm from a small city central Japan. It's named Yaizu. And you?
  2. I'm a first year university student.
  3. I live close to campus. It takes only 10 minutes on foot. And you?
  4. In my free time I listen to jazz, read novels, and go netsurfing. How about you?
  5. On Sundays I go shopping, hike, or meet friends. What about you?

J. COMMON MISTAKES:
Correct these mistakes individually, then your answers together -

  3. ? I'm a student. My major is economics. How about you?
  4. ? Glad to meet you, Ms. Susan.
  5. ? I am Suzuki.

K. DISCUSSION:
Imagine you are going to meet a woman your age for the first time from Canada.
Which of these questions to you think it would probably be okay to ask? Which questions should you avoid?

  1. How old are you?
  2. How tall are you?
  3. How much do you weigh?
  4. Are you married?
  5. What do you do in your free time?
  6. Do you like Japan?
  7. Where are you going?
  8. How long have you been here?
  9. What's you nick name?

L. HOMEWORK:
Option A -

Write a self-introduction. Mention your hobbies, occupation, hometown, etc.


Option B -

1. Make sentences using these words:


* speak up, * how often, * emphasize, * abroad,
* ring, * major in, * chat, * recently

2. Describe one of the three women in the photo above in detail.
