LESSON 11. STREET DIRECTIONS

GOAL: (1) To ask how to reach unfamiliar destinations, and
(2) to explain how to get to other locations in detail.


A. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS LESSONS
Answer the questions below -
  1. You're from southwestern Japan, right?
  2. How close are your parents?
  3. How busy is the nearest JR Station?
  4. How far is the nearest bus stop?
  5. What's your favorite food?
  6. Are you sober or drunk?
  7. How long ago was the movie "E.T." made?
  8. Have you bought anything new lately?
  9. How quiet is your neighborhood?
  10. Is there anything worth watching on TV tonight?

B. VOCABULARY FOCUS
Match the words on the left with the drawings on the right -

C. PRE-LISTENING
Discuss these questions in small groups -

  1. How expensive is a new car in Japan? How about a used car?
  2. How difficult is it to get a drivers license in Japan? How expensive is it?
  3. Are there many traffic accidents around here? (If so, why?)
  4. What's the speed limit on the roads around here?
  5. What happens if you break the speed limit?

D. PRONUNCIATION

Circle the word you hear, then practise both words


   1. It was a [long / wrong] street.   2. Turn towards the [light / right].
   3. I felt that [far / fur].          4. I went to a [Kona / corner] store.

E. LISTENING/SPEAKING FOCUS
Part A - Read this dialog and try to guess the missing words,
then listen to the dialog and check your guesses -


Kay is at Bangkok Station and is lost. She asks a stranger for directions -

**Kay: Excuse me. What direction is the ______________1?
**Stranger: It is that way. [pointing]
**Kay: How long does it take to get there _____2 foot?
**Stranger: About _________3 minutes.
**Kay: Thanks.
**Stranger: Anytime.

A few moments later Kay asks another stranger -


**Kay: Pardon me. I am looking for the __________4 Art Museum.
**Stranger: It's not so far. You see that intersection over there? [ pointing ]
**Kay:____________5.
**Stranger: Turn right at that intersection.
**Kay: OK.
**Stranger: Then go north two blocks. The Art Museum is just before
***********the __________6 stoplight.
**Kay: Thanks a million.

Shortly after that Kay asks yet another stranger to help -


**Kay: Excuse me. Is the Art Museum _________7 here?
**Stranger: Yes - it's just two blocks in that ___________8. [ pointing ]
**Kay: Do you know if it is open?
**Stranger: It's open until 4:30 everyday __________9 Wednesday.
**Kay: Thanks.

Part B - Now practice the dialog with a partner.
Look at your partner's face when you speak.

Part C - This time change the dialog to fit your own experience.
Feel free to depart from the text and adapt the dialog.


F. CONTENT QUESTIONS:
Write the answers to these questions-
  1. Where is Kay heading?
  2. How close is the art museum from the station?
  3. What time does the National Art Museum close?
  4. The art museum is open on Sundays, isn't it?


    G. STRUCTURED CONVERSATION
    Without looking at the sample conversation above,
    follow the basic structure of this conversation with a partner:


        What direction? -->  How far? -->  How long? -->  When open? --> Thanks

    H. ROLE PLAY


    PERSON A is a lost tourist. You want to go to the station, but forgot the way;
    PERSON B is a local resident - answer any questions and offer help.

    Correct these mistakes individually, then check together-

      4. * Do you except JAC card?

      J. DISCUSSION
      Talk with your partner(s) about travel, using these patterns:

      
      * What direction is your house?          * How long does it take you to get to here?
      * What is the cheapest way to Tokyo?     * What is the fastest way to get to your house?  
      * Are there any shrines near your house? * Can you tell me how to get to the nearest JR Station?
      * Where's the nearest post office?       * Ask more questions . . .
