GOAL: To invite friends to a social event and participate in an English karaoke party.


A.  REVIEW  Work in groups of 2-3 and review the previous 7 lessons, 
              switching teacher and student roles.

B.  VOCABULARY FOCUS  Discuss these questions in small groups:

C.  CULTURE FOCUS  Discuss these questions in small groups:

       1.   How popular is karaoke in Japan today? 
       2.   What sort of snacks and drinks are served at karaoke joints?
       3.   How expensive are most karaoke joints around here?
       4.   How often do most Japanese frequent (visit) a karaoke bar?

D.  LISTENING/SPEAKING 

       Art and Hitomi are acquaintances and talking on a train.

       Art:     Have you been to a karaoke ________1 lately?
       Hitomi:  Not recently. My ________2 is no good, but I like to sing. How about you?
       Art:     Last week I went to a joint in _____________3, but it sucked. 
       Hitomi:  Let's go to a new karaoke bar!
       Art:     OK, but I'm short of ___________4.
       Hitomi:  Don't _________5 - I'll treat you.
       Art:     Really? 
       Hitomi:  ________  ______6

       Shortly after that, they move inside a karaoke bar -

       Art:     What shall we sing?
       Hitomi:  Anything's fine with me. Who is your____________7 singer?
       Art:     I adore Billy Ocean, a British _______8 pop artist.  Have you heard of him?
       Hitomi:  Nope. I love _____________9. Do you know their "Sweet Dream Baby"?
       Art:     Yeah, vaguely.  Let's _________10 it together.

       Art:     You too.  Your voice is very ____________12.
       Hitomi:  [later] Well, lets take a break.
       Art:     Good idea.  I'm ______________13.

       Two hours later Hitomi decides it is time to leave -

       Hitomi:  What time does this ___________14 close?
       Art:     Around ____________15.
       Hitomi:  I'd better leave soon - I've got to __________16 a train.

E.  CONTENT QUESTIONS  Write the answers to these questions below:

      3.  Why does Hitomi say she must leave? ________________________________________

F.  COMMON MISTAKES  Correct these errors individually, then discuss in class:

       1.  *Let's go to a karaoke.  2. ?You sing songs well. 3. *I like the pop music.

G.  FURTHER DISCUSSION   Discuss these questions in small groups:

       1.  How do you like karaoke?                 2.  What is enka? How popular is it?
       3.  What are some  karaoke songs you know?   4.  How good is your voice?
       5.  How expensive are most karaoke joints?   6.  Continue to ask more questions . . .
